Sight

Several years聽ago, I was taught to read music using acronyms and mnemonics: FACE, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, and the like. This聽is, by far, the most commonly taught method for reading music. While the catchy聽sayings聽were聽easy to remember,聽it聽was聽a poor method of preparation for an early musician's ultimate聽goal: sight-reading, the ability to recognize notes quickly and play music fluently. I eventually managed to summit the sight-reading learning curve, but it was a long and聽unnecessarily tedious climb.聽

Upon studying music聽at Stanford, I came across something called the Landmark System, an聽unbelievably聽simple approach to reading music that required way less effort and memorization.聽All I could think was, "How much faster could I have mastered sight-reading if聽I had been taught this method聽instead?"

As you may have guessed, that's how this class was born. It was too late for me, but through this class, I聽now hope聽to share聽this聽knowledge聽with as many聽new musicians聽as聽I can!

Last thing: this class is meant to be a supplement, NOT a replacement, for a proper education in music theory.聽Music is so much more than being able to read notes,聽most of which聽this class聽does not聽even聽attempt聽to cover.聽Rather, this class was designed specifically to聽absolve the most common pain points of a musician聽learning how to sight-read.聽For lack of better聽words, this class is the Mario mushroom of musical sight-reading.
